University Overview

The University of Sydney, founded in 1850, is Australia's oldest university and a world-renowned institution, regarded as the academic leader in the Southern Hemisphere. It is a member of the prestigious Group of Eight and the six sandstone universities, as well as several global networks, including the Pacific Rim Universities, the Asia-Pacific International Trade Education and Research Alliance, the Commonwealth Universities Association, and the only Australian member of the Global Alliance in Management Education (CEMS).

Throughout its history, the University of Sydney has produced numerous distinguished figures, including eight Australian Prime Ministers, two Governors-General, five Chief Justices, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, the President of the International Court of Justice, the President of the World Bank, and Australia’s wealthiest individuals, surpassing any other Southern Hemisphere institution.

In the 2026 QS World University Rankings, the University of Sydney is ranked 25th globally, demonstrating its outstanding international reputation and academic influence.
